declownify: accessibility statement

This statement covers:

declownify is in development. None of these has yet been tested against the standard below.

Our target

  • Website, and the planned web interface: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 level AA.
  • macOS app: the same WCAG 2.2 level AA success criteria, applied to desktop software, together with Apple's accessibility features: VoiceOver, Full Keyboard Access, Increase Contrast and Reduce Motion.
  • Command-line program: plain-text output that screen readers can follow.

How we design for it

The interface design specifies the following for the web interface. The macOS app is held to the same rules on colour, contrast and keyboard use.

  • Status is never shown by colour alone. Every status pairs a colour with a shape and a word, and negative amounts are bracketed as well as coloured.
  • Text has a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1, and control borders and focus indicators at least 3:1. We check the colour pairs by calculation.
  • Everything can be done from the keyboard. Focus is always visible and follows reading order, and no keyboard shortcut submits, deletes or sends anything.
  • No moving content starts on its own. The interface respects the system's reduce-motion setting.
  • Every field has a visible label. The live-submission consent phrase can be pasted as well as typed.
  • Pages use landmarks, a skip link and a correct heading order. They reflow to one column at 320 CSS pixels without horizontal scrolling and work at 200% zoom. They respect forced-colour (high-contrast) modes.

For the other interfaces:

  • The macOS app uses standard SwiftUI controls, which expose their names and roles to VoiceOver.
  • The command-line program does not rely on colour, and its output can be read as plain text.

Known limitations

  • We have not carried out an accessibility audit or user testing with disabled people. We will do so before release and publish the results here.
  • The generated iXBRL accounts and computations follow layouts set by HMRC and Companies House. They have not been tested with screen readers.
  • declownify is available in English only. Welsh is not supported.
  • Some steps happen outside declownify, on HMRC or Companies House services or by post (for example activation codes). Their accessibility is outside our control.

Feedback and contact

If you find a barrier, or need information in another format, email letsmallbusinessesfiletheirowntaxes@okashi.school with "Accessibility" in the subject. Tell us what you were trying to do and what assistive technology you use. We will reply and tell you what we will do about it.

Preparation

This statement was prepared on 8 October 2026 from the product's design. We will update it after the first accessibility audit.
